From Vidyakashi to the Nation: Meet India’s Education Minister Prahlad Joshi

Hubballi: Dharwad, fondly known as ‘Vidyakashi’ for its rich educational legacy, is now represented at the highest level of India’s education system. Senior BJP leader and five-time Dharwad MP Prahlad Joshi is serving as the Union Education Minister, bringing the City of Learning into the national spotlight.

Born on November 27, 1962, Joshi completed Bachelor of Arts from Kadasiddheshwar Arts College in Hubballi, affiliated to Karnatak University, Dharwad, before entering public life. Elected to the Lok Sabha from Dharwad for five consecutive terms since 2004, he has established himself as one of Karnataka’s senior parliamentary leaders.

Having previously handled key Union portfolios including Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New & Renewable Energy, Joshi now shoulders the responsibility of India’s Education Ministry. His role includes overseeing the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP), strengthening the examination system, and steering reforms in school and higher education.

For Dharwad, a city celebrated for its universities, colleges and academic heritage, having its MP lead the country’s Education Ministry is a fitting milestone—one that reinforces Vidyakashi’s enduring contribution to India’s educational landscape.
